Burchfield Penney Art Center Gown

I had the amazing opportunity to create a piece that will be on permanent display starting spring '17 for the Burchfield Penney Art Center, which has been dedicated to Western New York art since 1966.  This art center chose to collaborate with the State University of New York College at Buffalo by having students submit designs after being inspired by the original Charles Burchfield wallpaper prints.  Once designs were submitted to the art center, seven designers were chosen to execute their designs.

To start out the process, I began draping the muslin onto the mannequin.   Once recieving my model a lot of adjustments were required in regards to the size difference from my model to mannequin.  After taking in the muslin and making the same adjustments onto my pattern as well, I then assembled the dress and fitted my model again.  Once properly fitted, I played around with how the chiffon would drape.  Seeing how it would lay, I decided to change my original design as to not cover as much of the dress.   I established the layout of chiffon blind stitched the hem of the draped chiffon and sewed it into the princess seams of the dress and pressed them into place.

Along with making this for the art center, I had the privilege of having the dress be in the annual runway show at my college, Runway 9.0   I've learned and grown so much from this experience and am so thankful for this oppurtinity.
